QRIS: Advancing ASEAN Collaboration through Integrated Payments |
QRIS, the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard, was introduced by Bank Indonesia in 2019. The sophistication of the QRIS system has made it one of the preferred payment methods in various transactions.
In 2023, QRIS has become a fast and practical payment solution.
Looking back to the time before the existence of QRIS, we had to adjust our payment methods and couldn't use a single payment card for all types of ATMs and electronic data capture (EDC) machines. Cash became an alternative payment method during that time.
However, since QRIS was introduced to the public, the "cashless" trend has been on the rise due to the use of QRIS as a fast and convenient payment method. People are no longer dependent on cash and can comfortably use the QRIS QR code scan as a more modern and efficient payment alternative.
QRIS not only facilitates domestic transactions but also has the potential to expand payment connectivity internationally. In the ASEAN 2023 Summit declaration, ASEAN leaders have agreed to collaborate using QRIS as a cross-border payment system. In this declaration, ASEAN leaders have committed to expanding cooperation in the payment system across the ASEAN region.

Connectivity in the Era of Collaboration
Entering the era of digital transformation, there are significant opportunities for collaboration between countries to advance their nations and the tourism sector through an integrated system. It is time for Indonesia to take the lead in creating change and demonstrating the excellence of Indonesia's payment system on the international stage.
Through the presence of QRIS as a cross-border payment system for ASEAN, this is a good opportunity for both countries and tourists. It not only facilitates transactions for economic growth in each country but also allows individuals and tourists to easily transact in the countries they visit.
Bank Indonesia's innovation in creating QRIS as a payment solution capable of integrating payment systems between countries and strengthening collaborative relationships among ASEAN countries is the most important part for each country to maintain good relationships and consider the welfare of their populations.
Opportunities for Using QRIS in ASEAN Countries
Cross-Border Transaction Convenience: QRIS becomes the payment standard used across all ASEAN countries, making it easier for tourists and visitors to make payments in other ASEAN countries. By using a single QRIS code accessible through a payment application on their smartphones, users can easily make payments at various places without the need to exchange local currencies.
Economic Growth
The use of QRIS provides a boost to economic growth in ASEAN countries by facilitating more efficient and faster transactions. This will increase people's purchasing power, drive consumption, and support the development of local businesses.
Simplification of Payment Equipment
QRIS allows for the integration of payment systems between countries, reducing the need for complex and expensive payment equipment. By using the same QRIS standard, ASEAN countries can reduce equipment development costs and optimize the utilization of digital technology.
Reduction in Cash Usage
QRIS as an alternative payment method can reduce dependence on cash. By promoting the use of QRIS, ASEAN countries can create a more financially inclusive society, accelerate the transaction process, and reduce the security risks associated with cash usage.
Tourism Enhancement
QRIS has the potential to enhance the tourism industry in ASEAN. With an integrated and user-friendly payment system for tourists, the tourism experience becomes more comfortable and seamless. This has the potential to increase the number of tourist visits to ASEAN countries and support the growth of the tourism sector.
Business Collaboration between Countries
The use of QRIS enables closer business cooperation between ASEAN countries. Businesses can easily transact and make payments with their business partners in other ASEAN countries, expanding market reach and increasing regional trade.
With these opportunities, the use of QRIS in ASEAN can strengthen economic connectivity and enhance cooperation among member countries to achieve common goals in economic and social development. This has the potential to have a positive impact on economic growth, ease of transactions, and connectivity among ASEAN countries.
